With Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead, Olga Tokarczuk returns with a subversion of the noir novel and the magical realist genre. The novel takes place in a remote village in south-west Poland where Janina Dusezjko, an eccentric woman in her 60s, describes the events surrounding the disappearance of her two dogs. When members of a local hunting club are subsequently found murdered, she becomes involved in the investigation. By no means a conventional crime story, this entertaining novel by one of Europes major humanist writers (Guardian) offers some thought-provoking ideas on our perceptions of madness, social injustice against people who are marginalised, animal rights, the hypocrisy of traditional religion, and belief in predestination. A film based on this novel, titled Spoor, is due for global release in 2018. Directed by Agnieszka Holland (well known for movies such as Europa, Europa and In Darkness), it is Polands nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 2018 Oscars.
